Boccia – CCA

Boccia is a target sport. The aim of this Niche CCA is for students to throw, roll or kick the ball as close as possible to a white target ball (the jack).

The game can be played either individually, in pairs or as a team of three. It requires a high degree of muscle control, accuracy, concentration and tactical awareness from the Niche CCA participants.

Boccia is a suitable Niche CCA for our students with cerebral palsy and those who have severe physical disability or neurological conditions such as muscular dystrophy, spinal bifida. Boccia can be played both recreationally and competitively.

Students in the Boccia CCA are formally classified according to their conditions before any competition. Athletes with similar conditions and abilities will be classified into the same class.

The table below shows a brief description of the four classifications:

Classifications
BC 1 Athlete has Cerebral Palsy with locomotor dysfunction strongly affecting the whole body.
BC 2 Athlete has Cerebral Palsy with locomotor dysfunction affecting the whole body.
BC 3 Athlete may have cerebral palsy or conditions of non-cerebral or degenerative origin.

Athlete has severe locomotor dysfunction in all four limbs.

BC 4 Athlete has severe locomotor dysfunction in all four limbs, of non-cerebral, degenerative or cerebral origin.
Objectives
  • Instill the three school values of Confidence, Respect and Resilience
  • Promote good sportsmanship, nurture leadership, encourage competitive spirit, teamwork and foster independence through planned activities
  • Improve coordination, muscular strength, control, concentration and challenging the mind to think strategically
  • Build teamwork and cooperation amongst peers
  • Promote Boccia as a form of recreational and/or competitive sport
Criteria

Students should:

  • Be able to understand and follow 1 to 2-steps instructions
  • Have a sense of direction (eg. far, near, left and right)
  • Have an how an interest in sports
  • Have good or normal eyesight with or without glasses
  • Be able to identify colors (white, red and blue) and follow simple game rules

Singapore Boccia Special Training Workshop 2019 

15 to 16 February 2019 at CPASS Hall

Our students and teachers from Boccia CCA attended the Singapore Boccia Special Training Workshop conducted by renowned Boccia Coach, Mr Kwon Cheolhyeon (Paralympian Coach). Coach Kwon shared valuable knowledge on how to improve their skills. It was truly a valuable experience.

5 to 7 July 2019 at CPASS

Students from the CCA Boccia participated in their first three-day and two-night training camp.  Through the activities, students were given the chance to display the school values and fulfilled the school belief that “Everyone can serve”.

Friendly Boccia Game with Elias Park Primary School 

1 November 2019 at CPASS

The CCA Boccia hosted 24 students from Elias Park Primary School on 1 November. Students of CPASS helped to host the students and gave them an insight to Boccia through demonstration and a series of modified Boccia games. It was a fun and meaningful session for both schools and we looked forward to host them again next year!

CPASS Championship 2019 

11, 18 & 25 October 2019 at CPASS

Students from the CCA Boccia participated in their first 3-day CPASS Boccia Championship 2019 on 11, 18 and 25 October. They tried their best and gave the audience a great showcase of exciting Boccia skills in their respective matches. Students Aloysius Gan from Class Eagle 1A, Sow Zi Xuan from Class Eagle 3A and Aaryll Ryan Das from Class Eagle 7A emerged winners from their respective categories.

Annual Youth Connect Event

21 February 2018 at Meridian Junior College

Three students from the CCA Boccia were invited to take part in Meridian Junior College’s (MJC) annual Youth Connect Event. They were Elijah Lam (Eagle 6A), Edara Vasishta Choudhary (Eagle 9A) and Bryan Cheong (Owl 10A). The main purpose for this event was to allow their J1 students to interact, experience and have a deeper understanding of the different groups of people in our community.

Tiger Balm Singapore Boccia Open

30 May to 2 June 2018 at Heartbeat@Bedok

Four nations – Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and Thailand participated in the tournament hosted by the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC). Our student Aloysius Gan, Eagle 10A, did us proud by representing Singapore in the Tiger Balm Singapore Boccia Open. Not only did he win a bronze medal in BC3 Pair but he also gained valuable experience when competing against other athletes from different countries.

Get ActiveSG! National Games 2018 (Boccia Individual)

28 & 29 July 2018 at Toa Payoh Sports Hall

This year, six athletes (Aloysius Gan, Eagle 10A; Gan Sun Ling, Eagle 4/5A; Seri Nuratiqah, Eagle 6A; Juraimi Abudallah, Eagle 6A; Edara Vasishta Choudhary, Eagle 9A & Soh Zhi Xuan, Eagle 9A) from the school participated in the Get ActiveSG! National Games 2018. Facing stiff competition from other schools, our athletes made our school proud by winning 3 medals for the:

  • BC3 Category, Gold medal – Aloysius Gan, Eagle 10A
  • BC2 Category, Silver medal – Gan Sun Ling, Eagle 4/5A
  • BC1 Category, Bronze medal – Seri Nuratiqah, Eagle 6A
Sun Ling was putting her visual acuity into practice as she assessed the ground for her next shot. With high amount of concentration and teamwork, Vasishta was determined to win a score for his school.
