Alister’s Journey: From Silence to Strength

“All of us, with or without disabilities, can come together as one people. No one should be left behind. Persons with disabilities should be fully included in society. Together, we can build a truly inclusive society, where everyone is empowered—not just to change our own lives, but the lives of those around us.”

Alister Ong on his vision for a more Inclusive Singapore

When he was born, Alister entered the world in profound silence. He did not cry. Before he could take his first breath, his brain was deprived of oxygen, leading to cerebral palsy — a condition that impacted his ability to control his arms and legs.

Growing up, Alister faced significant challenges as the world around him was not built to accommodate him. The curb cuts, ramps, and lifts that we often take for granted today simply did not exist in his formative years. Alister was also unable to join his peers at assembly, in the computer lab, or in the library. As a result, he internalised these barriers as rejection, creating mental walls that made him feel isolated and scared of trying.

Yet today, Alister is a transformed man — not because his circumstances changed, but because those around him believed in him. One pivotal moment came during a trip to the Philippines, when a volunteer leader invited him to share his story. The response was overwhelming. Many who heard his story came forward, expressing how deeply they were moved. It was in that moment that Alister began to see his own potential to give back to others, igniting a new sense of purpose and hope.

“If I could tell my younger self one thing,” Alister reflects, “I would say: ‘There is a hope, there is a future. When you look ahead, even though it may seem bleak or impossible… But there is a hope and there is a future — nothing is impossible.’”

Today, Alister carries that message of hope with him as he contributes in the capacity as a co-opted board member at Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS). CPAS is a social service agency in Singapore working with children and adults with cerebral palsy or multiple disabilities.

Alister’s story is more than just inspiring — it is a call to action. It challenges all of us to break down barriers, one small thoughtful act at a time, and to create a society where everyone is seen for their true potential.

“The donation you give goes beyond just money or support,” he says. “It is a gift of life, hope, and a future to us and clients at CPAS. It is not just about the act of giving; it is about the meaning and intention behind it.”

Your gift can make a lasting impact:

  • $50 could help provide a custom hand splint, restoring independence and functionality.
  • $200 could help provide a non-verbal client with a voice through an assistive communication device.

Let us honour Alister’s journey and empower many more like him. Will you stand with us?
